NanoSUN and IIT Hydrogen Bolzano sign a memorandum of understanding to initiate a collaboration aiming to jointly explore the operational use of Pioneer across a range of hydrogen applications in Italy, which will lead to the quick deployment of safe, reliable, and cost-effective hydrogen refuelling infrastructure.
IIT Hydrogen Bolzano, being the first in Italy to provide a public hydrogen refuelling station, bring invaluable first-hand experience of delivering infrastructure projects and navigating regulatory compliance. This, coupled with NanoSUN’s extensive experience in Pioneer deployments across the UK and Germany, positions us to develop a strategic roadmap for the adoption of hydrogen within mobility.
Italy is betting heavily on Hydrogen with a 3.64 Billion EUR national investment towards the Green Hydrogen transition, 230 million of which will be dedicated to establishing a national network of Hydrogen refuelling stations, 36 of which will be operative in 2026.
Pioneer provides a low CapEx opportunity for captive fleets to adopt hydrogen as an alternative fuel before the 2026 deadline, and beyond that will enable additional use cases, particularly suited to heavy-duty captive fleets of vehicles and off-highway applications such as construction.
Claudio Vitalini , IIT’s CEO said: “NanoSUN and IIT’s expertise and technical know-how complement each other very well. We believe the Pioneer system can be an ideal technical solution at the moment for the Italian market: it combines low power requirements with low infrastructure investment costs. These factors can help simplify the adoption of green hydrogen in mobility.”
Neil Tierney, NanoSUN’s CEO said: “Working with IIT Hydrogen Bolzano offers us an exciting opportunity to gain strategic entry into the Italian market allowing NanoSUN to progress in our global mission to make zero-emission transportation and mobility a reality. Our expertise in mobile hydrogen refuelling equipment paired with IIT’s regional knowledge and experience in developing fixed filling infrastructure will result in the availability of affordable hydrogen refuelling to accelerate the adoption of hydrogen as a fuel for heavy duty vehicles in Italy.”
NanoSUN is a world leading, award-winning, engineering company focused on the development, manufacture and commercialisation of mobile hydrogen refuelling solutions for use within the Transportation Industry. From Industrial Gases to Transport and Mobility sectors, we aim to accelerate hydrogen use with our innovative technologies by bridging the gap between the hydrogen supply industry and the needs of end users for convenient, low cost, simple-to-use and safe fuelling systems.
The Institute for Innovative Technologies (IIT) of Bolzano is a company historically active as a pioneer in Italy in the field of production, stocking and distribution of green hydrogen through its proprietary HRS, the first in Italy. It is now active in the engineering consultancy for development of green hydrogen projects for mobility but also “hard to abate” applications and sectors looking to decarbonise their processes. IIT wishes to offer their customers always new technical solutions for their needs.
