Developing an Environmentally Sustainable Business - Why go Green?

NanoSUN Environmental Sustainability

One of the important things for businesses to consider today is the impact they will have on society and the environment. There is an increasing concern surrounding the effects of climate change and for many business leaders it is becoming essential that they implement sustainable practices to help keep the planet healthy.

In a world where human actions have a significant impact on addressing climate change, it is imperative that businesses are environmentally aware and understand the key areas where they can make a difference to their local and global environment: The top areas being energy, waste, wellbeing, transport and purchasing. These five core aspects of environmental attention are known to be highly contributing to the planet getting warmer and are now being widely addressed through individual and joint efforts across the globe.

In addition to developing environmentally friendly products, there are now a number of ways companies can approach environmental issues within the workplace. Leaders can introduce sustainable purchasing to ensure suppliers use products that are made from recycled materials such as office supplies and furniture. Employees can also be supported and encouraged to suggest ideas and change their work activities; reducing the use of paper in the office, preventing unnecessary travel by holding online calls instead of face to face meetings and inspiring local commutes to work via bicycles to help cut CO2 emissions.

Developing an environmentally friendly business is not only beneficial to the planet but can also save the company money on resources and promotes good practice to customers. An international study conducted by Unilever last year revealed that a third of customers favour brands they feel are eco-friendly, highlighting that sustainability is important to potential clients and therefore business growth.

In an endeavour to do its bit for sustainability and participate in the journey to net zero, not only through its hydrogen refuelling products, but also through its company decisions, NanoSUN have been looking at ways to proactively tackle these issues to prevent impacting the environment negatively and be a voice of change within the workplace.

Whilst sustainability drives NanoSUN’s innovation within the Transport Sector and its product offering, the company is also passionate about transport when it comes to employee wellbeing. Based in Lancaster and having recently purchased new offices close to the motorway, NanoSUN understands that travel by car is necessary, particularly for those employees located far afield. However, it is strongly encouraged that local employees travel by bike. With an avid group of cyclists within the business, NanoSUN are proud to be a part of Cycle Scheme’s cycle-to-work programme and to support an environmentally sustainable means of transport whilst advocating a fit and healthy lifestyle. This is a simple practice that any business can implement to help do its part in reducing emissions and protecting our ecosystem.

The Coggin Group

To address the issue of waste, NanoSUN has also been carrying out sustainable purchasing. Having recently doubled its workforce and relocated to a larger office space requiring new furniture and supplies, NanoSUN tasked The Coggin Group to provide sustainable office furniture to avoid surplus furniture from ending up in landfill sites across the UK. Providing recycled desks, seating, storage and screens, the new office has been fully furnished in a way that not only reduces the impact on our local environment but is also cost effective for the business.

Nasa reports that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a group of 1,300 independent scientific experts from countries all over the world under the auspices of the United Nations, concluded there's a more than 95 percent probability that human activities over the past 50 years have warmed our planet. Over 40 world leaders now recognise climate change as a growing crisis and are focusing on carrying out plans to mitigate the risks. Following World Earth Day 2021, United Nations reported that the countries pledged to climate action have narrowed the 2030 emissions gap by 12-14%, with the largest contributions coming from the US, EU, UK, China and Japan.

It is therefore expected, now more than ever, for businesses to do their part and prioritise environmental responsibility. With various government and support programmes readily available to assist companies in going green and save money, it is everyone’s duty to collectively meet the challenge in creating a healthy climate and protect the planet.
