Hydrogen facilitates the decarbonisation of diesel vehicles
Converting standard diesel commercial vehicles, post registration, to run as dual fuel hydrogen-diesel vehicles is becoming a common modification. The conversion involves the supply and installation of tanks, lines, engine control and management systems. This type of conversion is seen as a reduced emission steppingstone toward a fully zero emission future.
Transition to an emission free, hydrogen fuel vehicle fleet
Tailpipe emissions from hydrogen are zero, with water as the only residual. A typical hydrogen dual fuel delivery van can cut CO2 emissions to less than 1/3 of a conventional diesel van.
Hydrogen suppliers are actively looking to introduce green methods for hydrogen production over fossil fuels, such as wind and solar power. This resulting in the production of clean, renewable generated fuel, such as ‘green’ hydrogen.
Hydrogen enables long distance journeys and the transportation of large loads
Hydrogen offers similar flexibility to diesel, delivering a long-range performance for long distance journeys, as expected with delivery vans. Diesel conversion to hydrogen also retains the ability to deliver short hydrogen vehicle refuelling times, with pitstops expected to take around 10 minutes.
Unlike battery electric vehicles, hydrogen powered vehicles also prevent the need to sacrifice payload. Hydrogen fuel cells and internal combustion engines (ICE) do not require the same space and weight as battery electric storage packs. This allows for the same volume and payload use as current vans, enabling them to continue carrying out heavy-duty, long-range cycles.
There are, however, few hydrogen refuelling stations available at present. Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Observatory reports around 10 located across the UK with some either not ready for service or unavailable. While government funding is helping to fund an efficient hydrogen infrastructure, a reliable hydrogen refuelling solution is needed fast.
The hydrogen refuelling solution for hydrogen vans
For existing fleet owners looking to decarbonise vehicle fleets or in the process of introducing a new fleet of hydrogen vans, the Pioneer 145 Mobile Hydrogen Refuelling Station can help get hydrogen powered vehicles up and running.
The Pioneer’s mobile ability enables hydrogen refuelling at any location, removing the need for you to rely on limited fixed hydrogen refuelling stations. NanoSUN’s Pioneer HRS can refuel a typical dual fuel hydrogen delivery van around 60 times directly at the point of use.

Benefit from:
- Combined hydrogen gas storage, distribution and dispensing solution
- Low cost - capital cost significantly lower than a fixed Hydrogen Refuelling Station
- Reliable - mobile nature enables units to back each other up, resulting in a more reliable hydrogen refuelling network.
- Mobile - rapid deployment, no fixed utilities
- Easily scalable - facilitates growing hydrogen powered vehicle fleets
